The Presidential Cabal

Did you know that Bush and Kerry are relatives, being both descendants of a certain Edmund Reade and Elizabeth Cooke? Shocking, isn't it?

Except it isn't really: go back 11 generations and the number of ancestors you have can rise as high as 211 = 2048, and when you consider that both Bush and Kerry hail at least in part from long-settled New England stock, it's hardly surprising to find that they have the odd ancestor in common, especially when one considers how small the settler population would have been in the early years of the colony. I'm willing to bet that the two men are even more closely related than this genealogical tree indicates, probably through multiple lines of descent within the last 7 generations.
