Sharon Fires Ministers Against Gaza Plan

Excellent news! This shows he means business. I'd feared that all of Sharon's talk of evacuating the Gaza strip had been just so much posturing, as it seemed strange to me that he should have been unwise enough to allow Likud to hold his plan hostage, and then so lackluster in campaiging for it.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Friday fired hardline ministers opposed to his Gaza pullout plan, a move that gives him a slim Cabinet majority for the proposal but could trigger a political crisis.

Sharon sent dismissal letters to two ministers of the far-right National Union Party, Avigdor Lieberman and Benny Elon, officials said. They take effect in 48 hours, just before a crucial Cabinet vote on the plan Sunday.
It's good to see the back of these two extremists, but by far the most dangerous opponent of the plan will remain in the cabinet - Benjamin Netanyahu. Ariel Sharon seems to be a believer in the maxim "keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
